Job Description

ESTIMATING MANAGER

Our client is a full-service manufacturing facility with over 100 years of experience providing superior quality and project solutions to their customers. From the nuclear industry to mining and transportation, they specialize in providing customer solutions using the latest tools and technology. A leader in manufacturing with success backed by the most rigid quality testing and standards, combined with expert skilled trades professionals and a project management team. Reporting to the general manager, the estimating manager is responsible for the following:

  • Promote a safe, injury/accident-free workplace.
  • Lead a highly capable team that provides unparalleled support to its internal and external customers by producing timely and accurate estimates for projects.
  • Work closely with the Sales team to aid in strategy/direction.
  • Oversee the internal Sales Account Manager to ensure alignment of priorities and capabilities.
  • Actively participate in the review of bid specifications to ensure the project scope is clearly understood by all stakeholders and priced accordingly.
  • Review specifications to ensure quotations include applicable terms and conditions while conforming to the customer’s bid format.
  • Continuously review estimating processes to ensure they quickly adapt to the business’s ever-changing landscape.
  • Continually evaluate bid opportunities to ensure the team’s resources are focused on the best win opportunities for the company. This includes ongoing evaluation of quote/no-quote criteria.
  • Ensure that all estimates reflect the company directive of progress billing as it relates to exposure to the business.
  • Coordinate estimating activities by gathering proposals, drawings, specifications, and related documents. Set quoting priorities for estimators.
  • Ensure estimates include accurate material cost fluctuations and availability, as well as correct lead times, are being quoted based on plant capacity.
  • Provide compressive handover document packages to the Production and Project Management team once a project has been awarded.
  • Participate in job close-out meetings to identify wins and gaps.
  • Identify, analyse, and address project risks with the Leadership team and any Quality concerns or requirements with the Quality Manager based on our Quality Assurance program.
  • Identify departmental process improvements through routine reporting and review of performance metrics.
  • Lead post-mortems on select completed works to identify anomalies and investigate for accuracy.
  • Track the company’s win/loss performance.
  • Work closely with the Sales Account Manager to collectively manage customers’ needs and expectations when it comes to quoting projects and providing a comprehensive bid.
  • Nurture a culture of accountability by setting clear performance expectations and metrics and then routinely meet with team members to provide ongoing support, coaching, strategic guidance, skills development and growth opportunities.
  • Work closely with the Engineering Manager when manufacturability concerns arise.

Management Responsibilities:

  • Manage Estimators and Administrators.
  • Performing employee performance evaluations, addressing employee performance and corrective action plans for management staff.
  • Responsibilities may include interviewing, selecting and hiring new employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Degree or Diploma in Engineering or Business is preferred.

Experience and Skill Set:

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential, along with experience collaborating with and presenting to senior management and executive leadership teams. 5-10 years of experience is an asset.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and product specifications.
  • Proficient in the understanding of supplier terms and conditions.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, Solid Works, 3D modeling an asset
  • Familiar with manufacturing processes such as welding, machining, forming and painting.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team-based, collaborative environment.
  • Always represent the Company with integrity in an ethical and legal manner
  • Comfortable participating in customer-facing meetings, as needed.
  • Be a change agent and self-starter motivated by a fast-paced environment.
  • Deep knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Google Sharing Docs, Word, Outlook); working knowledge of ZOOM and Microsoft TEAMS is an asset.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001, AWS, CWB procedures is an asset.

  • Mechanical Aptitude is a plus.
